The journey of our baskets
Transcending time and introduction of plastic, metal and other materials, traditional basket weaving in Yemen has continued from ancient time until today, where the many styles and designs of baskets are still produced and widely utilized in Yemeni households.
Each region of Yemen has their particular styles and designs in baskets, all made from natural materials such as palm leaves and wild grass. The Tihama baskets, produced on the coastal plains of the Red Sea, are in natural colors, softer appearance and often used to transport goods, for farming and food storage. In the mountainous highlands baskets are more solid and colorful triangles and zigzags are added for colorful geometric patterns.
Our baskets are weaved by women in rural areas, from the Tihama coastal plains to remote mountain villages in Sa’ada, Amran and areas surrounding Sana’a. Bringing the baskets to an international audience, brings income and hope to women who are often affected by armed conflict.
